CONCEPT + PROGRAM
The design brief emphasizes how the spatial conscience affects the human soul and feelings. The first step is to define space conscience by analyzing the site and interpreting the environmental condition. Using these 3 keywords (sequence of change, connection, separation) as a starting point in the concept development process. The keywords represent my views on the existing condition of the site and the feeling I felt. These elements of feeling will be bought to the program development process. The program that I chose is Urban Agriculture, the reason why this program fits my concept is that I wanted to implement something that is familiar to humans but on the other hand not many people understand what it is. not only that, but agriculture has also been part of the local's heritage and culture, so it is very reasonable to incorporate urban agriculture into the site. The goal was to let users experience and understand the whole process of agriculture from production to consumption, change their feeling or views towards agriculture, and reconnect citizens with their food source to foster environmental & economic resilience.
URBAN OASIS takes the meaning of discovering an oasis or natural feeling inside a dense urban environment, like a metaphor when people see an imaginary oasis in the middle of the desert. The design consisted of 4 main buildings each having its unique function and serving the whole design. The main entrance to the project is located on the Northwest side of the site (Xindu Rd.) where the parking area is located. The parking area itself was designed into 2 separate areas, the service parking area (worker & service needs) and the user/visitor parking area. The design itself aims to differentiate the 2 parking areas and avoid overlapping of people flow. Since both groups of people have different purposes and needs. The parking area is connected to the lobby building via the outdoor stair. The outdoor stair will take people from the parking lot into an underground area which is the lobby. The lobby building is located below ground level, so from the parking area, only the roofing part is visible.
Entering the main lobby, users will be entering the upper level of the lobby building and realize that the lobby building consisted of 2-floor levels. Users will walk down the stairs to the lower-level lobby and realize that both sides of the lobby are connected with neighboring buildings. From this point, users will have all access to other buildings. Walking out of the lobby will take users to the central courtyard, walking to the right side, users will enter the cafeteria area, walking to the left side, and users will enter the educational and locker room area.
The picture above describes when the user walks out of the lobby building into the central courtyard where they can see all 3 buildings around. One of the buildings is the retail building. The lower level of the building is a semi-outdoor space dedicated to the farmer’s market area that sells and buy local agricultural goods, meanwhile, the upper level is a retail space used to sell processed agricultural product such as rice, wines, etc. The retail space connects with the observation deck through a bridge crossing the site's river. The observation deck provides users with a bar and observation area.
Another building is the factory (manufacturing facility) which is located just under the farm area in the picture above. The factory adopts a unique design where users/visitors can come in and they are 2 options available. the first option is to see and observe the manufacturing process, so the visitor will walk through hallways with glass and can see the inner part of the factory (the manufacturing area). Another option is to take part in experiencing the manufacturing process. here, visitors will come inside the manufacturing area and experience the process guided by the worker. this enables interaction between worker and visitor.
On the side of the factory, there is an outdoor stairway that led users to enter e farm area. the farm area itself is categorized into 3 different farms: paddy, vegetables, and fruit farms. users can experience the process of planting, reaping, sowing, tiling, etc. The farm area also integrates the hill slope topography into its area, so users can also experience the site’s natural topography.
